Sunscreen

The sun's harmful rays are one of the major causes of premature ageing, causing tissue and collagen breakdown, pigmentation, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles.

The best protection against UV-induced damage is sunscreen, but with so many sunscreens available on the market, where do you begin? It's the great sunscreen debate, and we are here to help!

Let’s delve into the different sunscreen types and how to source a good one for your skin.

Chemical Sunscreen vs Physical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreen-
A chemical sunscreen absorbs into your skin and then absorbs UV rays, converts the rays into heat, and releases them from the body. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone.

Depending on your skin type a chemical sunscreen isn’t usually best as your skin still absorbs the heat from the sun. This can result in sensitivity.

Physical sunscreen-
A Physical sunscreen works by creating a physical barrier between you and the sun. Put simply, it is like putting a wall up to stop the sun. Physical SPF sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are th best and most common active ingredients found in physical SPFs.

The Effects of the Sun

Unprotected UV exposure is one of the biggest factors contributing to the deterioration of the skin and can result in premature ageing of the skin known as photo ageing.  Signs of photo damage include pigmentation, wrinkles, broken capillaries and loss of skin tone and elasticity. Photo ageing occurs when UV light hits skin unprotected by sunscreen leading to DNA changes at a cellular level. As photo damage occurs in the Dermis, the deepest layers of the skin, it can take years before the damage surfaces and becomes visible. This is why prevention is key. SPF is your number 1 skincare product must-have and it's important to be using one that offers the best protection.
