Acne

Adult acne, also known as post-adolescent acne is classified as acne that occurs after age 25. To an extent, the same factors that cause acne in teenagers also can lead to adult acne including; excess oil production, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation.

There are also indirect factors that can influence the above mentioned direct factors, including;

• hormones, stress and the menstrual cycle (as these all influence oil production)
• hair products, skin products and make up (which can lead to clogged pores)
• diet, which can influence inflammation throughout the body
• medications, including corticosteroids and anabolic steroids.

Many skin concerns, including acne, can be an indicator into a systemic condition. For example, hair loss, excess hair growth, irregular cycles or rapid onset of acne with no prior history can all be a red flag of an underlying condition such as polycystic ovaries or other endocrine disorders. 

Although it may not be possible to completely prevent breakouts, there are steps to take to limit the occurrence or severity such as;

• Never go to bed with make up, cleansing your face or make up and impurities that can clog the skin is an integral step of a good skin care regime.
• Manage and mitigate stress where possible, researchers have identified a relationship between stress and acne flare-ups because our bodies produce more androgens (a type of hormone) when stressed. The androgen stimulates the oil glands and hair follicles in the skin and can lead to acne. While avoiding stress in adult life can be both challenging, and unrealistic,  managing stress levels can help support the skin.
• Read and understand the ingredients in skin and hair care products and look for "non-comedogenic" products that won't clog pores.
