Pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation describes skin that appears darker and occurs in small or large patches and affect the entire body. There are several types of hyperpigmentation, with the more common types being; melasma, sunspots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy. It can also be referred to as chloasma, or the "mask of pregnancy" due to the correlation with pregnancy. Although this condition is more common in women, men can experience melasma also with the symptoms including patches of discolouration typically on the face and often symmetrical.

Sunspots, also referred to as liver spots, solar lentigines or age spots are related to sun exposure over time and generally occur on areas exposed to the sun like the face or hands. 

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs as a result of injury or inflammation to the skin with the most common cause being acne.

It is important the know the root cause of the pigmentation you are experiencing, but in all cases UV exposure will stimulate the melanocytes to produce melanin (pigment).    Using a high protection sunscreen is extremely important to reduce the amount of UV stimulation, and lessen the effects of sun exposure on your skin.  We recommend at least 30+SPF, however in some cases 50+ SPF is better.

Pigmentation can be caused by hormones, such as the pigmentation on the face experienced during or after pregnancy known as melasma.  It can also be caused by medication such as birth control pills.  Those taking Birth Control or HRT might experience pigmentation around the eyes, or upper lip as an example.

If the root cause of the pigmentation is still there (such as you are still taking birth control) the pigmentation will need to be managed, and is not able to removed completely, until the cause is removed.
