Exploring Hair Removal Treatment Options

Let’s face it—hair removal is one of those beauty routines that can feel like a chore, especially when you’re not quite sure which method is best for you. With so many different options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure where to start. The good news? There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hair removal—and that’s actually a good thing!

Whether you're after something quick and easy or long-term and fuss-free, understanding your options will help you make the right choice for your skin type, hair colour, lifestyle, and even your pain threshold.

Let’s break down the four most common hair removal methods—shaving, waxing, IPL and electrolysis—so you can explore which one might be the perfect fit for you.

Shaving

What is it?
Shaving involves using a razor to cut the hair at the skin’s surface.

How often?
Every few days, depending on how fast your hair grows.

Post-treatment care:
Use a soothing moisturiser after shaving to reduce irritation and always use a sharp, clean razor to avoid ingrown hairs.

Pros:

  • Quick and convenient
  • Painless (for most)

Cons:

  • Regrowth is quick—usually within 1–3 days
  • Can cause ingrown hairs and razor burn
  • Hair may feel coarse as it grows back

Waxing

What is it?
Wax is applied to the skin and then quickly removed, pulling the hair out from the root.

How often?
Every 3–6 weeks, depending on hair growth.

Post-treatment care:
Avoid hot showers, saunas, and exercise for 24 hours. Gently exfoliate between appointments to prevent ingrown hairs.

Pros:

  • Smooth results that last for weeks
  • Hair regrows finer over time
  • Suitable for most body areas

Cons:

  • Can be painful
  • Risk of ingrown hairs or irritation
  • Not ideal for sensitive or broken skin

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

What is it?
IPL uses pulses of light to target pigment in the hair follicle, helping to reduce hair growth over time.

How often?
A course of 8 - 12 sessions are typically needed, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions may be needed yearly.

Post-treatment care:
Avoid sun exposure and heat for at least 48 hours. Use SPF and keep the area cool and moisturised.

Pros:

  • Long-term reduction in hair growth
  • Less painful than waxing for many clients
  • Great for larger areas like legs, arms, and back

Cons:

  • Works best on light skin with dark hair
  • Not suitable for very light, grey or red hair
  • Requires consistency and commitment over time

Electrolysis

What is it?
A fine probe is inserted into each hair follicle, delivering a small electric current to destroy the hair root.

How often?
Weekly or fortnightly sessions for several months (or longer), depending on the area and hair density.

Post-treatment care:
Avoid touching or irritating the area. Use soothing creams recommended by your therapist and avoid heat or sun exposure for 24–48 hours.

Pros:

  • The only method recognised as permanent hair removal
  • Effective on all hair colours and skin types
  • Great for small, stubborn areas like chin, upper lip, or nipples

Cons:

  • Can be time-consuming
  • May cause mild discomfort or redness
  • Requires commitment to a treatment plan

Finding the Right Fit for You

When it comes to hair removal, there’s no “best” treatment—only what’s best for you. Some clients want smooth skin without daily effort, while others prefer something less permanent or more budget-friendly. Your skin type, hair colour, sensitivity levels, lifestyle, and even your personal preferences all play a role in determining the most suitable method.

Still unsure? That’s what we’re here for. At Complete Skin and Beauty, our experienced therapists can guide you through your options and recommend a hair removal plan that works for your needs, schedule, and goals.
