Post Party Skin Detox

How to reinstate your radiance after a big night

We’ve all been there… you surrender yourself to the festive season with late nights, cocktails, dancing and a lack of quality sleep. Sometimes, over and over - that’s half the excitement of silly season! Having a jam packed social calendar is all fun and games until your skin starts rebelling against your choices!

Repetitive days and nights of heavy makeup, sweat, alcohol and sleep deprivation can leave your complexion dull, sensitised and dehydrated; but don’t worry, your glow isn’t gone forever. Here’s a complete post-party skin detox guide to help you and your skin bounce back!

FIRST UP - THE ELEMENTS!

Water before anything else.

Skin health is more than just topical products. It starts internally. Drink a glass or 2 of H20 as soon as you can after drinking alcohol! Dehydration will make you feel SO much worse than if you prioritise your water intake.

Morning sunlight exposure works like magic for our health.

Getting your dose of Vitamin D within 30 mins of waking up helps to:

  • Synchronise your internal body clock (Circadian Rhythm) which aids your sleep quality at night
  • Triggers Serotonin which is nature’s mood booster
  • Enhances cognitive function, alertness and focus (that’s really going to help if you’re meant to be rocking up to work!)
  • A free immunity booster
  • Lowers blood pressure leading to an increase in heart health
  • Supports metabolic health for weight management
  • And the most important of all in supporting your post-party regime - detoxification!

The warmth of the sunlight helps to stimulate your liver and major organs aiding in removal of toxins from the body.

Aim to get 10 - 30 mins of exposure. If you’re feeling crappy, a walk might not be on the cards (save that for when you feel better) but maybe throw a blanket on the grass and try a short outdoor meditation/stretch sesh or make it as simple as just sitting outside to eat breakfast! Eating breaky surrounded by nature can be really wholesome and restorative for body, mind and soul.

After those steps are taken care of, head into your bathroom and let’s jump into the ultimate revival skincare regime! It’s going to be about stripping back your routine to gentle and supportive.

Start with a thorough double cleanse

After a big day (or night… or both!), your skin needs more than a quick swipe of micellar or… god forbid… a baby wipe. Start with an oil-based cleanser to melt away those layers of makeup and sunscreen. [Try O Cosmedics Nourishing Cleansing Balm! This award winning cleanser goes on as a balm, is massaged in as an oil and turns to a milk with water, picking up dirt pollution and makeup as it goes!] Follow up with a lighter or water based cleanser, removing sweat, dirt and any residual oil or makeup for a thoroughly cleansed face.

Why it works: Double cleansing ensures your skin is thoroughly clean without stripping it - perfect for preventing breakouts and congestion

Exfoliate

An enzyme exfoliant is perfect after a night out. Think of an enzyme exfoliant as a game of pac-man; the enzymes (usually derived from fruits) munch away at dead skin cells and filament in your pores revealing clearer, more radiant skin. [Try O Cosmedics 3 in 1 Fruit Peel for a versatile addition to your regime. This Unique peel, mask and gommage is powered by v8 peptides, papaya, pomegranate and mango enzymes and a natural AHA complex to release redundant cells and reveal a healthy, radiant and smooth complexion.]

Tone

Although this step isn’t essential, it does give you that ‘fresh’ skin feeling. [Personally after a night out, i would make sure i DON’T skip this step!] The purpose of a toner is to help re-balance the skin’s PH levels and superficially hydrate after cleansing and exfoliating.

Mask it up!

There are a crazy amount of mask options out there but why not throw on an InSkin.Co Plump & Glow Sheet Mask and treat your skin to a bit of TLC? It’s easy, and a great excuse to put your feet up and sink into a book or your favourite netflix show :) especially if you’re feeling a bit yuck. These masks come with 30 serum infused sheet masks, fortified with hydrolysed elastin, marine collagen and hyaluronic acid  to deeply hydrate and revitalise tired, dull and ageing skins.

Brighten your eyes!

Use an eye serum or corrector specifically designed to brighten and smooth the under-eye area, which is often affected by late nights. O Cosmedics Eye Correct is developed to specifically target dark circles, lines, wrinkles and puffiness. It is powered by their signature v8 peptide complex, powerful moisturisers, tetrapeptides and has a luminescent patent to really disguise whilst also treating whatever kind of situation you’ve got going on in your eye area!

Treat and Hydrate!

Excess sugar, alcohol, and elevated stress levels impact the skin in various ways, but one problem they all contribute to is chronic dehydration, which leaves skin looking uneven, dull and visibly dry. You may even be hit with itching or flakiness and by this point she REALLY needs help. The best and most effective way to do this? Layering the treatment serums and hydrators from thinnest consistency to thickest and most nourishing. You may have seen this trending on social media of late, referred to as ‘slugging’ but it’s really a Skin Therapists’ second nature and we have been doing it since the beginning of time. It just makes sense! It allows the thinner consistencies with the lower molecular weight to absorb (think your water based serums like O Cosmedics 3D Hyaluronic Serum] and then locking them in with your thicker products that are naturally heavier in molecular weight [Try O Cosmedics Vitamin C Hemp Seed Oil - Liquid gold for every skin condition!].

Prioritise rest: (and skip the makeup if you can)

While it’s tempting to stay up late, (especially busy Mum’s chasing their only period of alone time) not enough quality shut-eye and neglecting a regular sleep routine is bad news for skin. When we sleep our skin goes into regeneration mode, replacing damaged or dead cells with new ones and repairing deterioration and damage. Quality sleep also increases blood flow to the skin and contributes to essential structural work, such as rebuilding collagen and elastin (the very proteins that festive excesses damage). Skipping those precious hours, means all of this vital maintenance work isn’t taking place, instead increasing levels of inflammation, slowing repair systems and causing flare ups of acne, rosacea and eczema/psoriasis. Your one day recovery plan? Stick to a moisturiser and tinted sunscreen. Need to run some errands? Throw on some tinted gloss, brow gel and mascara. Wham, bam, thank you Ma’am! Keeping it minimal allows your skin to breathe & it will love you for it after suffocating under layers of primer, makeup and setting spray.
