Is Maskne the new Acne?

The last 12 months has been a whole new time for us and we have constantly adapted to new changes; social distancing, hand washing and sanitising and the new norm wearing a mask. With doing this we have seen and experienced some of the downsides such as the dreaded Maskne. As a skin therapist I am here to share with you some tips and tricks to help minimise the redness, soreness and breakouts

What is Maskne and how is it caused?

Just like regular Acne, maskne is caused by numerous variants such as not washing your mask enough, using harsh detergents, your mask itself and the materials it is made from, how frequently you wear it and wearing make-up under your mask.

Wearing a mask helps stop the droplets (from talking, coughing, sneezing and breathing) from getting into the air and that’s what we want them to do but the downside to this is it traps moisture and bacteria which is touching your skin. With masks creating a seal-like barrier it creates the perfect humid environment for acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

So how do we heal our skin?

      1. Put down the exfoliant!

I know it is very common to think let’s scrub our skin down and start fresh. But this isn't the case, skin is a very complex structure, it cannot be scrubbed away, that would be way too simple. Skin is an organ and needs to be loved and supported with healthy skin ingredients. I always tell my clients to think about hydration over exfoliation. The more hydration added into your skin, the more juicy perfect round the skin cells will be. When skin cells are super hydrated they communicate more efficiently they create the perfect eco-system for our barrier function to do its job and stop the breakdown for other skin conditions such as inflammation and congestion.

2. Switch to calming, restorative skin products.

So what ingredients are great for keeping the skin in tip-top shape? Personally I take an inside out approach with the first step being EFAs. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are vital for healthy skin as they support the skin from the inside out such as the EFA rich Omega 3 ,6 & 9 great for both brain function and skin health. These ingredients work to repair every single cell membrane in our body which is going to fill our skin cells with water to keep them super juicy and waterproof the skin. In addition, they will thin out our sebum making it more free-flowing and not getting stuck in our pores causing breakouts. EFAs are also going to help reduce inflammation allowing your skin to heal faster.

O Cosmedics Repair serum: This serum is the Bee Knees when it comes to healing skin, with epidermal growth factor (EGF) and encapsulated reverstal, it helps improve skin healing by rebuilding and strengthening while reducing inflammation in the skin. EGF is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that increases the oxygen uptake into the skin (more blood flow = glowy skin), while improving your skins natural wound healing response through stimulating cell function. Encapsulated reverstal is a new ingredient on the block but has slowly made its way through the ranks within the beauty industry, this little beauty is an antioxidant which slows cell-aging and protects collagen.

And my favourite protection, Mineral Pro Sunscreen! The mineral pro doesn't only protect your skin from harmful UV rays, it also is very soothing on the skin and helps remove inflammation with Zinc Oxide. Zinc Oxide is a bit of the unsung hero in many ways. It is a protectant from UV and free radicals, it has extremely anti-inflammatory properties as well as being skin repairing. The best thing about the Mineral Pro is you can use it as a spot treatment at night time to help restore the skin.

3. Be kind to yourself

This is a pretty simple task isn't it? Right? Why does it matter? Skin is a holistic approach, your mind is such a powerful thing and we have to remember our body communicates with every single cell in our body. Thank your skin daily for protecting your internal insides and doing its job. Skin will heal and wearing a mask is only going to be for a short time ( hopefully) kindness is key!

4. Book in for LED

Speed up the healing process with LED light therapy. Your skin uses LED Light as a source of energy to repair and rejuvenate damaged cells as well as to treat acne by killing bacteria. The energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation and accelerates skin repair. This is the perfect relaxation treatment as you simply lie underneath a screen, have a snooze while receiving a neck and shoulder massage while the device does all the work. LED is recommend 2-3 x a week for maximum results and why wouldn't you if you are getting a massage and healing your skin?

Another good tip when wearing masks is to switch to a mineral powder or go make-up free. If you are not a fan of going make up free, our Youngblood mineral make-up is perfect for the skin as it allows it to breath with a buildable coverage.   But remember, be kind to yourself, your skin is doing it’s best job protecting itself but if you have concerns or want to learn more, book in for a complimentary skin consultation.
