Oxidative Skin Stress And Free Radical Damage Explained

Skin ageing is a normal process of life, however there are many external factors that can contribute to the acceleration of that process. Oxidative skin stress and free radical damage are both heavy contributors in the development of premature ageing in our skin. This occurs when there is a presence of free radicals in the skin which leads to cellular damage causing increased signs of ageing, such as; hyperpigmentation, dehydration, inflammation, fine lines and barrier impairment.

What are Free Radicals?

Time for a small science lesson – What are Free Radicals? The word “free radicals” is very commonly thrown around these days but what exactly does it mean?

Free radicals are referred to as unstable molecules, meaning that they have one or more unpaired electron. Because they are unpaired, free radicals will search for additional electrons, causing havoc as they normally take from other cellular functions. When we have a presence of free radicals in our skin, they steal electrons from healthy skin cells, causing them to break down and degenerate, leading to oxidative skin stress and the development of premature ageing. Free radicals come in many forms; pollution, UV exposure, cigarette smoke and many other environmental factors.

How to prevent the damage from occurring?

Although we will all experience some level of oxidative stress to a degree, the damage may be prevented in the skin by the regular use of topical antioxidants. Antioxidants have been proven to be beneficial in the prevention of premature ageing due to free radical damage as they can stop the vicious cycle of cellular breakdown. As we remember, free radicals are unstable molecules, now when we introduce topical antioxidants into the skin they will donate electrons, which will prevent free radicals taking from healthy skin cells causing them to degenerate. Important topical antioxidants that can be incorporated into your skincare routine to help prevent damage are; Vitamin A, B, C and E.
