Skin In Your 20's

You're in your twenties and your collagen is thriving! Live it up and embrace your youthful spirit, but don't forget to give your skin some love too! Taking care of your skin now will ensure a lifetime of radiant, healthy-looking skin. Get ready to discover the transformations taking place within your skin, along with the 4 Golden Rules for achieving skin that radiates.

“Why?” you say?

As we enter our twenties, collagen and cell turnover is in its prime. This explains that dewy glow! However, as we move towards our late twenties, a transformation begins. Unfortunately for some, this is where teen flashbacks can occur with the return of hormonal breakout. Don't fret though - this one's easy with some AHAs and a Salicylic spot treatment going a long way. Along with the possibility of increased breakout comes a decline in our skin's lipid quality and quantity, leading to epidermal water loss, increased inflammation and the appearance of fine lines.

While some may appear unscathed, this doesn't mean changes aren't happening where you can't see them. Around the age of 25, our collagen production slows by 1% every year. That's right, EVERY YEAR! There are a plethora of contributors such as; UV exposure, age, genetics, the wrong skin care, poor diet (inflammatory foods), pollutants, and smoking, just to mention a few. Yes, this sounds scary, and no you shouldn't give up.

With the right skincare routine and smart habits, you can keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant for years to come. It's all about finding the right balance, so don't be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you. Remember, taking care of your skin in your twenties is an investment in your skin's future.

Let's take control and stop damage in its tracks, Follow these 4 Golden Rules for a youthful, radiant and glowing skin.

Golden Rule 1:

Sun Protection

In your twenties, one of the most crucial things you can do for your skin is to safeguard it from the sun's harmful UV rays. UV rays can penetrate deep into the skin and cause damage to our collagen and elastin, not to mention our epidermal basal cells, putting us at risk of skin cancers. Collagen provides structure and firmness to our skin, while elastin gives it elasticity and bounce. When UV rays break down these proteins, it can lead to signs of ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of skin elasticity. So, while a day at the beach may sound like a dream come true, it's important to protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays to keep your collagen and elastin in tip-top shape.

To protect your skin, make sure to slather on sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day and, most importantly, don't forget to reapply every 3 hours. Wear protective clothing and sunglasses when you're out and about for extended periods.

My favourite is this beauty - O Cosmedics Mineral Pro SPF 50 Tinted, ultra nourishing with a mattifying effect. Perfect worn alone or under makeup.

Golden Rule 2:

A solid homecare routine

Another key aspect of maintaining healthy skin in your twenties is to establish a consistent skincare routine. This should consist of cleansing morning and night.
Side note: did you know, during the day our skin accumulates dead skin cells, dirt, sebum, sweat, pollutants and bacteria? This contributes dramatically to oxidative stress (a big ageing contributor), breakout, dehydration, and overall cell functionality and health.

Serums (hyaluronic acid for hydration, antioxidants such as your vitamins A, B and C), moisturising your skin twice a day, wearing SPF daily, and exfoliating once or twice a week to remove dead cell build up should also be considered in your  skincare routine.

If you're prone to breakouts, look for skincare products that are specifically designed for oily or acne-prone skin. When you're ready to start, it's time to talk to the pros! Schedule a skin consultation with a skilled therapist who can diagnose any skin conditions and provide expert guidance on the most effective products for your skin's unique needs. This investment in your skin's health will not only save you valuable time, but also keep your wallet happy in the long run.

Golden Rule 3:

Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Along with a consistent skincare routine, it's also important to pay attention to your diet and lifestyle.

  • A balanced diet loaded with fruits, veggies, and good-for-you fats, like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, can work wonders for your skin. These healthy fats are key players in maintaining cell health, supporting your skin's protective barrier, and fighting inflammation throughout your body. So why not treat your skin to a tasty dose of nourishment?
  • Drinking plenty of water is essential for keeping your skin healthy and glowing. Not only does it help to keep your skin hydrated, but it also aids in flushing out toxins and waste products from your body. These toxins and waste products can contribute to common skin concerns like acne and blemishes, so staying hydrated is a simple yet effective way to keep your skin clear and refreshed.
  • Get that Beauty Sleep! A lack of sleep can lead to decreased blood flow to the skin, resulting in a tired, lacklustre complexion. It can also cause an increase in the stress hormone cortisol, which can break down collagen and result in fine lines and wrinkles.

With these things in mind, it doesn't mean you can't have naughty food, a few drinks and a late night. Simply follow the 80/20 rule! That's doing the good stuff 80% of the time.

Supplements can be beneficial for anti-ageing in your twenties too, by helping to fill in any nutritional gaps in your diet and supporting skin health, collagen production, hydration and antioxidant protection.

Here's my Favourites:

Omega-3 fatty acids: These are essential fatty acids that are important for overall health, including skin health. They help to reduce inflammation, prevent dehydration and improve the overall health of the skin.

Probiotics: Probiotics are the ultimate wingman for your skin! These little helpers work hard to keep your gut's bacteria in tip-top shape, resulting in a clear and radiant complexion. Not only that, probiotics also help to reduce inflammation, which can lead to a reduction in acne and other skin conditions. So go ahead, give your gut (and skin) the support it needs with probiotics!

Collagen supplements: These supplements are designed to boost collagen production in the skin, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin elasticity.

Golden Rule 4:

In-Clinic Treatments

Ready to elevate your skin game?

Get ready to lock-in that youthful glow with in-clinic treatments that target collagen maintenance and premature ageing prevention such as; Skin Needling, Clinical Facials, LED and IPL Skin Rejuvenation.

  • Skin Needling- It's a minimally invasive treatment that involves using tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the skin's natural healing response, leading to the production of collagen and elastin. And why is that so great for skin in your 20s? Collagen and elastin are the building blocks of healthy, youthful-looking skin! By boosting your skin's production of these key proteins, we kick age prevention into overdrive! microneedling can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring. Plus, it can also improve the texture and tone of your skin, leaving you with a smoother, more radiant complexion.
  • Clinical Facials and Peels- These powerful treatments exfoliate the skin, revealing a fresh, glowing complexion and addressing concerns like acne, sun damage, and fine lines. Plus, they can even boost the effectiveness of your other skincare products.
  • LED Light Therapy- works by emitting different wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at varying depths, triggering a range of benefits like increased collagen production, reduced inflammation, and improved circulation. These treatments are non-invasive and require no downtime, making them a convenient and effective choice for busy 20-somethings.
  • IPL Skin Rejuvenation- IPL, or intense pulsed light, works by delivering short bursts of light energy to the skin, targeting areas of pigmentation or discoloration. This causes the targeted skin cells to break down and eventually fade, leaving you with a more even, radiant complexion. IPL can also stimulate collagen production, helping to reduce and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Now's the perfect time to schedule that skin analysis, chat with your skin expert and get started on your skin journey. It's also a good time to visit a skin cancer clinic for a once over, especially if you notice any unusual moles or pigment spots or changes in the colour, shape, or size of moles on your skin.

In summary, taking care of your skin in your twenties is all about prevention and maintenance. With the right habits, a consistent skincare routine and a treatment plan with your skin expert, you can keep your skin looking youthful and healthy for years to come.

Until next time, farewell, and don't forget beauty is more than skin deep, so take care of yourself inside and out.
